The politics of green
By Maurice Petersen
Agricultural consortiums have done a good job of lobbying our congress. They have managed to get congress to subsidize the ethanol from corn industry. The also have managed to put a high import tariff on importing ethanol. This helps insure the high subsidy amount the farmers enjoy. Some comments from the financial suggest we are taking money from non farmers and giving it to farmers in the form of a subsidy. The aquafers under the corn growing states of the mid west are being depleted because of the enormous amounts of water used to process the ethanol from corn. Farmers that have traditionally grown non corn crops such as vegetables that we enjoy so much are now growing corn. That's where the money is. Cattle and hog feed lots are shutting down because of the cost of feed. To me the above information is worth a serious review of the corn to ethanol fiasco. That is hard to do when something is politically correct. Several new methods of making ethanol have been developed that don't take vegetables off our supermarket shelves and don't deplete our ground waters, but, they are not politically correct. |
