The Hobby Gardener
By Maurice Petersen
Over the years most of my hobbies have come and gone. The hobby that has stuck by me from mid teens to present is gardening. The term gardening has expressed itself in various ways over the years. As a kid I enjoyed working the flower beds around the house. I liked to see the soil tilled and looking sharp. That was a motivation for me, but, I think the main motivation was watching the plants grow. And it still is. I remember sending off for seed catalogs with all the flowering plant pictures. That was a learning experience as the plants looked better in the seed catalog than in my flower beds. With persistence I have been able to select plants that both I myself and the climate I lived in like. For a lot of years the desire to see plants grow resulted in vegetable gardens and orchards. At one time I had over 800 different Daylily cultivars. I had several I raise from seed. That gets very interesting because each plant that develops from a seed is unique. It may look similar to another and yet it is different. Selective hybridizing of daylilies is a hobby in it self. Several citrus trees have been adapted to the area where I live. I enjoy being able to pick a ruby red grapefruit for breakfast or lemons for a lemon pie. Citrus fruit usually matures around the first of December. That can make for a cool trip out to pick the orange or grapefruit. |
